OK, so last week I was feeling probably a little over-confident after my tour of LucasFilm, and I stated:

"Big Death Star playset. More than one even. The hope is that parts included in upcoming toys and Battle Packs would allow us collecting types to modify our sets even more to have things as we’d like them (a bit). That, however, is a no-brainer, and I didn’t wake up early to be that obvious. Expect Phase 1 at "holiday" time here in the states. (You didn’t think they’d reveal those Ultimate Battle Packs without having something bigger and better, did you?)"

After consulting with Hasbro more directly and more closely, I have to say that I no longer believe that Hasbro will be releasing such an item this year. (Never say never, as Hasbro has often said that nothing is off the table.) So I’m going to load up my plate with humble pie. I misinterpreted a lot of information from sources, and the end result is that I am wrong (at least at this time). Maybe sometime in the future, who knows?

While I’m bursting bubbles, although I never ran with this one, the rumors about a Star Destroyer, Super Star Destroyer, Acclamator, or any other type of large triangular ship are not true at this time or the foreseeable future. (The good news is that one of the team is very vocal and passionate about making one.) Don’t lose faith.

Finally, today should have been Friday Give-Away Day, but the loot that I’ve been waiting on from Comic Con has yet to arrive. So I’ll try to dig up EXTRA goodies for next week’s randomly selected winners. (And, yes, I know I have to give you lot the full rules and regulations for the Show Us Your BMF contest. Who knew there’s so much involved in writing simple contest rules?)

OK, so, I don’t usually post on the weekend (blog posts, that is) but when some people call, I listen. The caller who sent the photos of the BMF called, and I woke up from my toy-induced coma.

So… allegedly Hasbro conducted a focus group at Comic Con (all under NDA, which, well, I’m not) of 100 people who wanted to buy the BMF Millennium Falcon, and the big company from Rhode Island wanted to know about the toy’s potential drawbacks. (I own three at the moment — I’m not biased. I love it more than the bulk of my family.)

Key complaints (from the alleged focus group) are (as follows):

Missiles — Apparently collectors would prefer more lasers and fewer projectiles (which get lost quite easily) and a nicer lower cannon.

The Escape Pod/Shuttle: Which our chosen 100 representatives felt could be put to better use (and I really have no idea what they’d use it for, but these are focus group people — they’ve ruined many a toy). What would you do with that space? (Oh, and I admit, I want those freakin’ doors to open!)

Doorway: The door between the cockpit and the corridor. I agree, it might be a tight fit, but, yeah, it really does need to be there so the whole ship doesn’t seem incongruous.

No Lando-vator! People really do seem to want our great Cloud City Superfreak to save Luke Skywalker‘s bony backside from certain death. Don’t ask me (as I agree) but it makes sense that people want to see Lando Calrissian do something to redeem himself after all of his kniving to (potentially) save Cloud City. He owes us (the fans) that rescue and his vainglorious attempt to save face.

OK, so, the big question is this — will we see an updated and retooled Empire Strikes Back version of the BMF, or is Hasbro just covering bases and gauging demand? Either way, there are some of us (ME!) who would buy both. There are some who will nag and nag because the toy is missing some panel that they saw for 1/32nd of a frame. I just report what I hear, folks, but a Lando-vator is wanted, appreciated, and needed.

(I honestly cannot thing of a single thing the big H could add for a Return of the Jedi remix, but if you’ve got ideas, post ‘em, and we’ll hash ‘em out right here.)

In addition to the usual points of articulation, it looks as though this bounty hunter has some stealth features hidden underneath all of the tubing and wires that make this robot go-go-go. In the hi-resolution shot, pins are noted at the elbow, knee, and ankle. It appears that IG-88 may also feature a swiveling bicep, and a midsection pivot joint. We’ll know more very soon, as the "Vintage" 30th Anniversary Collection figures are due later this spring.

Who better to start off with than that luscious Darth Vader (Deconstructed) from the upcoming Force Unleashed line? I’m a little jaded, as readers may know, but my fanboy heart skipped a beat when I saw him. (Click photo to really, really enlarge. Heavy load time.)

To answer a few e-mail questions I’ve received, no there will be no cape packaged with the Biggs Darklighter figure, and there just isn’t time to make the correction. Or at least that’s what they told us. We honestly don’t know where the communication gap happened, but keep in mind that even LFL doesn’t have 100% source material for every costume and character. It just fell through the cracks.

"Why didn’t you shoot _______?" I fell into a toy k-hole, or under figure hypnosis. Take your pick. My friend and associate Stephen Prescott did pick up the slack with a hefty supply of photos, but if something was missed, we do apologize. (No, Hermie Odle was not there. I’m sorry — he just wasn’t there.)

"How are they going to fit that Vaporator into the package?" Hasbro is strong with the Force, and they will use it.

"Why do you want Gargan so badly?" My name is Adam, and I am a Jabbaholic. I know that she’ll be a tough sell, but, and I say this as a gay man, six breasts are better than two. (But what do I know?)

As things wind down here in NY, and I head back to home base, I will post more super-hi-rezzers for you Blogger readers. (If you have requests, that’s what the comments section is for.)

Finally, I want to wish my friends Dan Curto and D. Martin Myatt the best of luck with their new "all toys, all the time" venture, cooltoyreview.com — they’re really putting heart and soul into this. So make sure to have a look.

We (myself, the other websters out there) had a chance to chat with Big Daddy Derryl DePriest (Director of Marketing and the Star Wars go-to guy) at Hasbro‘s collector-press ‘do’ yesterday, and we dug into him with a few queggestions…

On the suggestion that Hasbro create Ultra Battle Packs in a larger box with a more playset feel (my suggestion was the same quality work we received for last year’s Dagobah X-Wing) and of course more figures as a means of creating a playset-like item…

Without getting a direct quote, DePriest said, "Hang on to that idea." The intimation is that something is in the works that will satisfy us in this manner.

We questioned whether or not there would be not-one-but-two large scale vehicles (say a tank and a walker with roving commander center play features) for Clone Wars 3D?

The response from DePriest was a smile, and a "we’ll see" before we were ushered out.

Is Gargan in the mix?

Not for 2007, and she will be a hard sell. However, Hasbro is trying to fill that request.

I suggested putting her and other dancers into the Max Rebo Band exclusive sets that are potentially coming, and we’ll see where that goes.

There’s never really enough time at Hasbro for all of the talking and questions that we (the bloggers, websters, and others) have, so hopefully our pals at yakface.com and the Star Wars Action News picked up a bit more. Check them out to see what they might have to say.

First off, Target-marketing, you did a bang up job of promoting the Imperial Shuttle by enforcing some sort of vow-of-silence scheme when we all knew it was coming. Really, top notch work there, guys. (I’m certain that this wasn’t Hasbro‘s decision because they usually do a decent job of promoting important exclusives to the collector community.) That said, I doubt many of us who have area Target stores are going without, and I suspect there are plenty to go around.

Part of the reason that I suspect Target tried to keep this vehicle hush-hush would be to have enough on-hand and in-stock for the promotion. We collectors get their DPCI stock numbers, and we actually have the audacity to ask for customer service. Thus, we are scum of the earth to them. We have had to resort to this because of Target’s capricious "resets", anti-collector policies, and, frankly, weak customer service.

Target forgets that it’s called "the working man’s boutique" and "cleaner than Wal*Mart" as pejoratives, not compliments. Every store should be kept stocked, clean, and selling. That’s how retail works. As a wise woman once told me, "from the moment you open your doors, you’re having a going-out-of-business sale." Having had Target managers actually tell me that the customer is never right, I know that their prosperity as a company will not be long-lived. Like Sears, K-Mart, and others, they will fall on hard times eventually, and they will go "down market".

Target employees forget that they are simply shop clerks. I’m not your guest, redshirt, I’m your customer. I have money, and you work in a shop that wants to take it from me in exchange for goods. Don’t let the "walkies", scanners, and headsets fool you, you are shop clerks. There’s nothing wrong with being a shop clerk, mind you. However, Target employees think that they’re special because they use little gizmos to check stock. That makes them shop clerks, not spaceage merchandising wunderkind. Sorry for the rant there.

Target employees, also please take note, don’t be fooled by your company’s silly "associate" cheers and pep-rallies. You can be as rah-rah perky as you like, but your attitudes toward collectors must improve. I keep receipts. I make a point of showing your "leaders" how much I spend in their stores. When you are rude to me (and those like me) you are alienating people who spend a lot of money — and not just on Star Wars toys. When a manager (director, leader, whatever) is confronted with real money figures, the customer is right. You don’t want to be on the wrong end of that math.

Getting back on topic, Target, just sell me my crap, let me buy whatever trifle I’m buying at your big, red bargain bin, and let me get out of there with minimal attitude. Seriously, life is hectic enough these days without getting snide comments from a kid in a red shirt with a God complex. Fix this, or suffer the fate of other uppity retailers.

The funny thing is, I had no trouble getting my own Imperial Shuttles on Black Friday, but I’ve heard enough horror stories. (Granted, I had a cart with several hundred dollars’ worth of merchandise in it, so arguing with me would’ve been a bad thing. Good redshirt! Good! Go fetch the nice man’s toys!) I’m sickened when I hear of fellow collectors being mocked and mistreated at a DISCOUNT RETAIL CHAIN.

If I wanted to be mocked and mistreated, I could call my family.

P.S. Yes, it was meant to read as rude and condescending. I know how to speak their language.
