If Hasbro did playsets, I'd miss out. Because I absoutly wouldn't buy all the figures. Same with these Trek figures. I'd LOVE to have the playsets, but I don't want all the figures, and more importantly, I don't want to spend that much on them to finish the sets.

Well, at least the base playset comes with a printed mat to provide some visuals before all the components are added. I forgot to remind Adam to mention that not all 18 Bridge parts are actually on the pegs yet... so the layaway-like scheme sounds pretty spot on. <img src="/blogger/wp-content/plugins/editormonkey/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/msn/wink_smile.gif" alt="" />

Look at it this way: For the $150 Falcon, you also get two figures you probably already own. For the combined $221 Bridge & Transporter playsets, you get 23 new figures. The only double dipping is the figures that come with the playsets (Kirk and Scotty).

Or you can look at it another way: It's Playmates Toys' layaway plan. Not everyone can afford a $200 toy, especially in this economy. This way you're only spending $25 on the Bridge or $30 on the transporter and can build as you go, six or seven bucks at a time. (TRU is currently pushing the 3 3/4" figures at 2 for $9.99. Get them now while supplies last.)

According to Playmates, more figures are on the way this summer. If you look at the ten that are out there now and check out the movie trailer, it ain't hard to figure out which characters will show up next in variant uniforms. (That's the beauty of the Trek toy line; it's a lot like having clone troopers as main characters. Very repaint friendly.)

Bottom line: If Hasbro can offer Droid Factory figures in their core line, modular playsets can't be too difficult. "Build-A-Death Star" anyone?

Mario, I'm sure the company hopes to make more figures (and there are a couple of cool aliens in it). I guess we'll have to wait and see. I'm not sure where I'd draw the line on a playset (because I'm a playset junkie) but that thing sure isn't taking the space of one of my BMFs.

Does the line even have 18 characters? There's the Enterprise crew, the antagonist, and old Spock. Is that even 10 characters? So to fill up your playsets, you have to double dip on characters. Huge ripoff!
